As someone who grew up in Irving, TX and went from Kindergarten to 12th grade under the Irving ISD education system, I took huge issue with the recent events regarding Ahmed Mohamed. It was truly disheartening to see the way such a bright young student was treated due to his passions and the racism of others.
I wanted to write a piece to speak about this issue and to support Ahmed in his future endeavours.

Dorm Room Air
What can happen in a second?
The air can change
The one second it takes someone to exhale
as they climb the steps into their new dorm room
is a climax of mixed emotions
Where happiness, wonder, loneliness, relief, and retreat
come together, all at once, fluttering in the chest
desperate to escape through that exhaled breath
But the air it travels through is thick
with emotions others have released in their own breath
So in the next second
the next inhale brings back more emotions, both old and new,
fluttering right back inside you
This continues every second
until the community of new roommates and neighbours
begin to relax the air that we breathe in.

Brother: Spoken Word performed at Opening Bell Coffee
On June 17th I went to an Open Mic Night hosted by Opening Bell Coffee in Dallas, TX and performed my poem Brother.
I created this poem to leave my two brothers the only advice I could give them to live in this ever-changing world: The world is so much more than just you, but you can immensely affect the world.
You can watch the performance below! Thank you to the friends who came to support me and recorded me.
